Interventions for Struggling Students
Many students at all ages struggle with academics, language, or emotional or social skills. At Pine City Schools, interventions are provided at multiple levels to assist students with difficulties in these areas. This approach is often referred to "Response to Intervention" or "RTI." The Problem Solving Team analyzes student needs, selects and provides interventions to help the student gain the skills s/he needs. The Problem Solving Team uses data to track student progress and determine if the intervention is effective.
Most of the time, students are successful when they receive interventions. Students learn the skills they need and eventually, no longer need interventions. However, some students continue to struggle despite multiple interventions. When students continue to struggle, the Problem Solving Team works with parents to determine if it is appropriate to refer a student for an evaluation for Special Education.
At Pine City Elementary, academic interventions are usually provided through the "Alternative Delivery of Specialized Instructional Services" (ADSIS) program. ADSIS is a grant from the state of Minnesota that we use to provide interventions to students. If your child participates in the ADSIS Program, you will receive updates about the progress your child is making. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child's progress or if you are wondering if an evaluation for special education is necessary, feel free to contact me directly!
